One of the greatest challenges of the modern era is to feed a growing human population whilst maintaining a healthy, productive and high welfare animal population. We need to better understand the factors that influence animal health, welfare, productivity and resilience, for example by adopting a ‘one health’ approach, and how this knowledge can be applied to build food security through the development of sustainable agricultural systems. Through its research in critical underpinning disciplines including animal welfare, infection and immunology, antimicrobial resistance, clinical and translational research, and development of methods for early automated disease detection, Bristol Veterinary School is taking a leading role in building the research capacity to address this global challenge.

Bristol Veterinary School has a research portfolio that spans key areas of fundamental, translational and clinically relevant veterinary-related research and invites applications for a professorial appointment to further grow its research within or across areas of current strength or future potential. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to build and implement a programme of international quality research, have proven research leadership skills and a strong track record in obtaining grant income. The role will involve identifying new opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and will be pivotal to the School’s desire to link fundamental, applied, and clinical research. Applications are welcome from individuals who do not currently have links to clinical research areas but would be excited to develop these by working in a Veterinary School environment.

The successful applicant will provide strong research mentorship and role modelling for staff within the School. They will be committed to education through supervision of postgraduate research scholars to grow the future generation of researchers, and through inspirational teaching to actively engage our undergraduate and postgraduate students in global research questions, and engender in them a belief in their ability to bring about change.

A key goal for the University of Bristol is to sustain and improve upon our world-leading reputation for research. The post holder will play a pivotal role in this strategy and will be expected to form strong collaborative links across the wider University through the formation of strong partnerships with our Research Institutes and Strategic Research Groups.

For further information and an informal discussion about the position, please contact: Professor Richard Hammond, Head of Bristol Vet School, hos-svs@bristol.ac.uk, +44 (0) 117 928 9401.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 23rd April 2017.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
